New Mars Probe to be designed by the University of Colorado
After nearly a year of delays, NASA awarded a $485 million contract to the University of Colorado. The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University will develop what they are calling the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution mission, or MAVEN. This probe is designed to orbit around Mars and it will study the atmospheric conditions of the planet.
The delay in choosing the winner of the contract has resulted in the scheduled launch of the new Mars probe changing from 2011 until 2013. Once in orbit around Mars scientific study will be conducted for approximately one year.
